Usually a man and a woman, although same sex relationships are not uncommon. Most of us date around a bit when we're young. Sometimes things don't work out. But when you're sure that this person is the one that you want to spend the rest of your life with, that's when you get married.
Most often, the man proposes. Traditionally he'll get down on one knee and ask his intended to marry him, offering her a diamond engagement ring. If she accepts, she'll wear the ring for the rest of her life. It symbolizes that the couple is engaged to be married.
[She holds up her hand to show him the emerald ring on her left ring finger.]
It goes on this finger. James got me an emerald rather than a diamond, because it matches my eyes.
[A pause to admire the ring.]
Then there's a wedding. A wedding is a ceremony where you stand before all your friends and family, and a religious figure, usually, and make vows to one another. The traditional vows go, if it were me and James, "I, Lily, take you, James, for my lawful husband, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and health, until death do us part." Then they exchange simple gold bands. a symbol that the two are officially married. Both will wear them until they die. Or longer, I suppose. Most people are buried still wearing them. Then there's a kiss and it's official.
Oh, and the man in the relationship is the husband, while the woman is the wife. During the ceremony he'll usually wear a tuxedo, if you have any idea what that is, and the woman wears a white dress with a veil. That's the white hat with the lace.
